Is anyone who is a current college student having good luck finding jobs with limited experience?
Is anyone who is a current college student having good luck finding a job with the economy the way it is?
The reason why I ask is because I am a current college student and I have been looking for jobs since April and so far no luck. I have some past experiences, but not a lot. I have done some acting for the summer and worked in retail for a month before I had to go back to school. I did do work study in a coffee shop for about a year but no calls yet. The calls I did get were from insurance companies that paid based on how much you sell rather than hourly wage and I was not sure about applying there based on my experience. I even looked online for tips on how to edit my resume. What should I do now and what tips could you give? Also, has anyone have luck in finding jobs
I was having a hard time, and I have more work experience than you do (though I’m also younger than you, I would guess). The fact is, the economy is pretty sucky right now, and a lot of people older than you with a lot more experience are having a time of it finding jobs. The only reason I got a job is because a good friend was able to vouch for my skills and hard work, and wrote a letter of recommendation for me.
Bottomline? Apply everywhere you can think of, even places in hiring freezes. If they want you badly enough, they’ll hire you (I got hired at a place that is currently in a hiring freeze). Also, make sure you look polished and professional, even if you’re just popping in to get an application. Try to use paper applications whenever possible, because these force you to go in and out of the store, so there’s a chance a manager might see you and think you a good fit–as opposed to you just being a name on an online application. After your application has been turned in, wait about a week and then call to follow-up–they’ll either turn you down or go review your application. It’s a good way to get yours at the top of the pile. In the meantime, seek out volunteer work–it may not be a paying job, but it will boost your experience and your chances. Good luck!
